Charity, Communications & Environmental Preservation in One Donation

An Oakland County environmental initiative, named Charitable Recycling encourages the donation of used cell phones and serves multiple excellent purposes by one simple act of charity. Donating a phone results in a monetary contribution to a local charity; brings communications to areas and people who might not otherwise afford it and helps preserve the environment.

Charitable Recycling has been established in partnership with REAP2 and Automation Alley. There has been an overwhelming response to the program since its inception earlier this year. “It’s a wonderful feeling to help local charities raise funds, especially when monetary donations are dwindling given the current economic climate” say Rhonda Linton, Program Manager.

It is estimated that 150 million used cell phones are retired each year. “Used cell phones contain many toxins and should not end up in landfills,” continues Linton.     “ The phones that cannot be recycled are disposed of according to EPA standards,” explains Linton.

“Recycling cell phones will certainly help to keep Mother Earth free from some of the toxins which would otherwise harm all our children yet to come,” said Adrienne Brant James of Turtle Island Great Lakes Center, which addresses technological, industrial and environmental interactions.

A program partner, The Rainbow Connection, a Michigan non-profit organization in Rochester that grants wishes to children ages 3-18 with life-threatening illnesses, is a recipient of the program. “This program is a wonderful way to raise funds for the Rainbow kids while giving back to the community” says Patty Flack, Executive Director. “We have a long list of children with wishes to be fulfilled. The funds received by the Charitable Recycling Program has helped us grant those wishes,” Flack explains.

There are a number of Michigan charities currently participating in the program including: Care House of Oakland County, Christ Child Society, Civitan International, Oakland County Branch, Haven, Renaissance Unity Church in Warren, Rochester Community Schools Foundation, St. Michael’s We Care of Monroe, St. Vincent Sarah Fisher Home, Students Protecting Animals, Western Michigan University, The Rainbow Connection and Women’s Survival Center of Oakland County.

Donations can be mailed in and collection sites for charities can be found at the Charitable Recycling website, www.charitablerecycling.com The address for mail-in donations is also listed on the website. Several local companies including Lifetime Fitness in Troy and UAW Community Services at the Visteon plant in Chesterfield are supporting the program with collection bins at their sites. The Charitable Recycling Program is also currently in discussion with a number of national companies/franchises, who many become national collection sites.

The Charitable Recycling Program is a great way to give more this holiday season by contributing a gift to your earth and benefiting worthy charities in one easy act. “ Donate your used cell phone today” asks Linton. All donations to the above mentioned charities are tax-deductible. A tax donation receipt can be generated at www.charitablerecycling.com
